Cowden Protocol
What is Cowden Protocol?
Cowden protocol (also known as the Nutramedix protocol) was developed by Dr. William Lee Cowden, MD. The protocol itself is a holistic and multifaceted approach through microbial support.
This is one of the more popular protocols since it is relatively cheap (around $300-500/month) and can be done at home without a practitioner.
According to lead Lyme Disease practitioner Dr. Horowitz, the Cowden protocol improved acute and chronic Lyme symptoms in over 70% of the patients in whom he prescribed the full protocol.
How does the Cowden Protocol work?
The Cowden Support Program (CSP) is a monthly protocol that uses 14 NutraMedix products on a rotational basis. Products are taken daily according to a set schedule.
Dr Cowden recommends following this program until feeling well, then continue the program for 2 more months.
“In 2003, I began developing this program to help my clients achieve wellness who were experiencing various health challenges. There have been many improvements to the program throughout the years. The most common report that I hear from clients who completed this program is “I got my life back.”
-Lee Cowden, MD
What is in the Nutramedix Cowden Protocol?
Dr. Richard Horowitz utilizes the Cowden/Nutramedix protocol frequently in his patients. After a six month study, he found that 70% of his patients who used Cowden remained well for months or years.
We do have an affiliate with NutraMedix, if you purchase this protocol it may go to helping benefit patient programs. See more of our work here and what it could benefit.

Does the Cowden/Nutramedix Protocol Work for Lyme?
According to lead Lyme Disease practitioner Dr. Horowitz, the Cowden protocol improved acute and chronic Lyme symptoms in over 70% of the patients in whom he prescribed the full protocol. A follow-up study was conducted by researchers from the University of New Haven by Dr. Eva Sapi. She tested the effectiveness of Samento and Banderol extracts on several different forms of Borrelia burgdorferi, including the spirochetes, round bodies, and biofilm-like colonies they form. (Learn more about different forms of Lyme Disease here) The results showed that the herbal extracts were effective in eliminating or dramatically reducing all three forms of the bacterium.
Eva Sapi’s team continued to study further finding Stevia (a component of Cowden protocol) to be extremely effective against biofilms. Read more about her study here. This study led to the incorporation of stevia in the Cowden protocol that can now be purchased easily by patients across the world.
